I developed this roll myself. in my mission of becoming a true pictorialist, it was probably about time I tried doing it myself. Big thanks to miles for giving the tools to do so. I didn’t use the scanner quite right, but I think the soft focus, and intense chiaroscuro, take me where I wanted to go with the feeling of these photos. #35mm

Tell me about the dream where we pull the bodies out of the lake
                                                                                and dress them in warm clothes again.
          How it was late, and no one could sleep, the horses running
until they forget that they are horses.
                    It’s not like a tree where the roots have to end somewhere,

                              how we rolled up the carpet so we could dance, and the days

a consolidation of film photos I took at my grandfather’s home, Manderley, in Salem, West Virginia. this was 2021, the last time I was there, and the last time I will ever be there. My grandfather and grandmother have both since passed. My grandfather built this house in the 60s, with bricks from Salem International University, where he worked as a psychology professor. my grandmother was a violinist and a writer. the entire inside he built from holey chestnut wood, a wood now wholly rare and incredibly valuable after the blight. My mother Diahn and her two sisters, Inger and Liesel, grew up here, back in these woods, on a couple acres of forest all to themselves, and a couple Siberian huskies. The Honda used to be my mother’s car, then mine, then my grandfathers, until we found it crashed in his front yard. the last photo my aunt took of me sitting on the terrace they called, “rainbow terrace”. #35mm #appalachia #westvirginia

portraits of JP taken downtown. JP has done many of his own tattoos (the first ever on his thigh), and dreams of opening his own tattoo studio called “jailhouse”, full of prison cells with their own prison toilets. his tattoos and the music he creates are his way of coping with the different pieces of his personality he feels have been disconnected through many different eras of his life, and we talked a good bit about his time in juvenile detention, where he was in solitary for 8 months. If you see him downtown, ask him about his music, legend of Zelda, or bitcoin - he is exceptionally easy to talk too.
